Keep reading this helpful guide for some tips on how to decorate a long living room for the best results. There are simple things you can do to make this space work for you.

Furniture Tips

While you may think the best thing to do in a narrow space is to place furniture against the walls, this actually makes your space feel smaller as it highlights the length of the space. Instead, pull your furniture away from the walls and create a seating arrangement in the middle of the room. This can be helpful even if you pull the furniture out just a few inches away from the wall.  This will allow you to have a cozy lounge area with two narrow walkways on either side. It will also help to get rounded furniture with soft edges to break up the abundance of straight, horizontal lines. Add a circular coffee table or ottoman at the center of your seating area and place small circular side tables next to your chairs and sofa for some extra surface space.  Rounded chairs can make for a set up that’s easier to get around. The tulip chair remains the most popular classic design and it comes in many different styles. Rounded details, such as light fixtures and lampshades, round mirrors, and art will also help to break up a space with a lot of straight lines.  Along with rounded furnishings, round upholstery, fabrics or patterns are a great option. Round area rugs help to draw the eyes to the floor to create some interest.

Layout Ideas

If you have one long room, dividing it into two different spaces can be a great way to make the most of the space. You may consider having two different zones or conversation spaces, or a seating area and a small home office space. You could also make half of the living room a dining space.  You can use area rugs to separate these two spaces. To help the two spaces look separate and organized, placing the legs of each piece of furniture on the area rugs can help to give each space a distinct and orderly look. You can also use large pieces of furniture to separate these two spaces, such as a sofa which you can place perpendicularly.  You could place a table or console on the other side, or use a cabinet or desk to place against the back of the sofa. This could work as a table or desk for the other space.  Another great way to make a narrow living room appear larger is to take advantage of verticle space. Using tall bookshelves, armoires, mirrors, artwork or photos can help to draw the eye upward to break up the expanse of a long verticle space. Floor to ceiling drapes, especially options with verticle stripes or patterns, also helps to create the illusion of height.
